On Wednesday, September 10, 2025, we launched the MICA Lab for Transition Communication—a new place where practice, research, and knowledge come together to make communication around societal transitions sharper, smarter, and more effective. From the perspective of media and communication, we research and develop ways to create movement in themes such as sustainability, health, digitization, and social equality. We connect initiatives and work together to build communication that works and brings about change.
Lecturer Bianca Harms, from the NHL Stenden Transformational Media Research Group, explained what the MICA lab for Transition Communication is. Alderman Abel Reitsma then officially opened the lab. We concluded with a panel discussion featuring Ate van der Meer from Snakeware, Loraine Westerneng from Sociale Voedseltuinen Nederland (Social Food Gardens Netherlands) and various circularity initiatives, and Christiaan Boerma from Frisius MC on communication around social transitions. What is the MICA lab?
The MICA lab for Transition Communication is a new knowledge and practice center established by NHL Stenden, Firda, the Municipality of Leeuwarden, and MICA. We work together, from the perspective of media and communication, on urgent issues within social transitions such as sustainability, health, digitization, and social equality. The lab offers space for students, researchers, and professionals to develop impactful forms of communication that really set things in motion.
