At MICA, we work with thematic labs: temporary or structural workshops where students, researchers, and professionals experiment together on urgent social issues. Each lab has its own focus, approach, and network of partners. In addition, you can always send us communication, media, or innovation issues, and we will see if we can link them to students.
The MICA Lab for Transition Communication researches and develops the role of media and communication in societal transitions, such as the energy transition or circular economy. With the Transformational Media research group led by professor Bianca Harms, students, researchers, and partners work together on real-world issues and create interventions that positively influence behavior and awareness. The Lab acts as a connecting link in a network of living labs and shares acquired knowledge via a digital platform and showcases.
The Media Investigation Lab (MIL) is an open, interdisciplinary lab where students, teachers, professionals, and experts work together on one of the greatest challenges of our time: recognizing and combating misinformation and disinformation. In a world where fake news, deepfakes, and online manipulation are becoming increasingly sophisticated, the MIL offers a powerful learning environment that focuses on critical thinking, digital literacy, and research skills. Set up by lecturer Deike Schulz from the Organizations and Social Media research groupand led by Anke Vellenga, lecturer-researcher at NHL Stenden and the aforementioned research group.
The CreAI Lab focuses on the creative applications of artificial intelligence. Students and creators experiment with AI as a co-creator in media, communication, and marketing. Here, we not only explore what AI can do, but also what it should do—with a focus on ethics, ownership, and imagination.
