Our approach rests on three pillars:
1. Networking
We bring media companies, creative agencies, and communication professionals together to explore where the sector is heading—and what that requires from our development. Through events such as MICAfé and Open Agency Night, we are building a network that learns, creates, and innovates together.
2. MICA Lab
In the MICA Lab, students work on current issues from the field. They always collaborate with real clients from the media, government, or creative industries. This creates space for experimentation, co-creation, and fresh perspectives.
3. Knowledge development & dissemination
We share what we learn in practice. Through the MICAdemie, with workshops, research, publications, and training courses, we develop knowledge that is directly applicable—and that is in line with the changing world of media and communication.
MICA was established by four founding partners who joined forces to strengthen media and communication innovation in the North:
Together, they lay the foundation for an environment in which talent, practice, and creativity come together.
At MICA, you don't follow a separate program, but work on real-life issues in collaboration with companies, based on your studies at Firda or NHL Stenden—for example, Media Design or Creative Business. In this so-called free space between education and business, you discover things by doing, with room to experiment.
MICA is more than just a foundation—it is also a physical place with a campus concept. Located in an area brimming with knowledge and innovation, alongside partners such as Wetsus and the Water Alliance, a vibrant environment is growing here where students, education, and businesses come together. In addition to MICA activities, there is space for offices, student housing, and catering. Architects Jacob Borren and Bauke Tuinstra are designing an open and accessible environment that matches the atmosphere of MICA: connected, creative, and dynamic.
